CNN’s Van Jones made an effort to goad Waffle House sh**ting hero James Shaw Jr. into launching a personal attacking against President Donald Trump on Friday. Jones repeatedly pointed out the fact that President Trump had chosen to reach out to Kanye West, a rapper, and yet had not extended the same to him despite his heroism.
Shaw made national headlines last month after he pried a rifle from the hands of a g*nman who shot several people, k*lling four. Tennessee lawmakers hailed Shaw for his “brave actions” in a ceremony last week.
Jones kicked off the Friday night segment by asking Shaw whether or not he had heard directly from the president. Shaw said that he hadn’t, but that he couldn’t say for certain whether or not the White House had attempted to make contact. “I haven’t heard anything, but that’s not to say he didn’t try to contact me, or not.”
Shaw did not respond to the bait. He simply brushed the criticism aside, and graciously responded by saying simply he knew how busy President Trump must be.
Jones stated to Shaw of the events that transpired on that fateful April evening in Antioch, Tennessee – “You touched the whole world. I mean all you have to say is Waffle House hero. Everybody knows who you are. Have you heard yet from President Trump?”
However, that response was not sufficient for Jones, and he followed up by essentially asking his question again, clearly trying to provoke a response.
Shaw again humbly replied, “At this time I haven’t heard anything, but that is not to say he didn’t try to contact me or not.”
Jones then attempted to escalate the situation in a woefully transparent attempt to get a reaction out of Shaw, taking things just one step further, saying, “he gave a shout out to Kanye today. How do you feel when the President of the United States missed an opportunity to hold up somebody who’s trying to do good stuff like you?”
“So he hasn’t successfully contacted you, you know, but he gave a shout out to, you know, gave a shout out to Kanye today,” Jones said as he tried to for the third time to provoke Shaw into the desired response against President Trump – “No shout out to you. How do feel when the President of the United States misses an opportunity, to hold up, you know, somebody who is trying to do good stuff like you?”
Shaw’s response was perfect.
“I know he has a busy agenda, busy schedule. Maybe he just hasn’t gotten around to me and maybe my time is coming. It’s not for me to judge whether what he does is just, you know, I did what I did. I didn’t really do for recognition, I did it just to save my life, honestly.”
Jones was even blown away by his response, replying, “Wow. That is amazing.”
Yet interestingly enough according to the Tennessean an invitation to the White House for Shaw may already be in the works accord to White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders –
“The man hailed as a hero for prying a g*n out of the hands of the Waffle House sh**ting suspect in Nashville may be going to the White House.
Asked Tuesday whether President Donald Trump had called James Shaw Jr., White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that a trip to the White House may be in the works.
“My understanding is that there has been an outreach effort to bring him here to the White House, and I’ll keep you updated on that as I have more information,” she said.
Shaw, 29, who was a customer at the South Nashville restaurant, is credited with saving numerous lives after he wrestled an A***5 out of the hands of Travis Reinking, whom police say opened fire about 3:25 a.m. on April 22.
Four people were k*lled and numerous others were wounded in the attack.
Shaw said he ran toward the bathroom when the gunfire rang out. Then, realizing he was trapped, Shaw rushed the sh**ter as he was reloading, grabbed the hot barrel of the A***5, disarmed the sh**ter and threw the g*n over the Waffle House counter.
When describing the events as they unfolded of the horrific events Shaw told the Tennessean he “cried at least four times Sunday after a tragic morning where he wrestled a g*n away from a s*****r at an Antioch Waffle House.”
The first time Shaw Jr. cried was in an ambulance at 4 a.m. while he was transported to the hospital for a gunshot wound. One of the paramedics asked Shaw Jr. questions while checking his blood pressure.”
“He asked if I had kids,” Shaw said. “I thought I could have possibly never seen my daughter again. That hurt.”
Meanwhile, the city of Nashville has welcomed Shaw with open arms and hailed him at the hometown he so clearly.
