Police apprehended two truck drivers after searching their vehicle. They found something, hidden away in a fuel tank. The shocking discovery has put these men in serious trouble with the law.
You never know what you might discover at a truck stop. These crossroads bring all kinds of people together. Mostly truckers. While the vast majority of these men and women are hauling goods across the country, some of them are up to no good.
Perhaps rumors were swirling around about two particular truckers. It seems like their haul was very unique. Word got back to Harnett County police that these men were carrying something altogether unlike anything they’ve seen before. And completely illegal.
A quick search of the truck revealed their prize. What was stashed away in the driver’s fuel tank? Weapons? Illegal animals? Stolen electronics? How about over $90 million worth of meth.
Two men were arrested and a semi-truck was seized on Saturday after police discovered the vehicle’s driver’s side fuel tank was holding $90.8 million worth of liquid meth.
Raul Arreola, 48, of California, and Aquileo Pineda, 49, of Georgia, were booked at the Harnett County Detention Center in Lillington, North Carolina, on three counts of trafficking methamphetamine, WTVD reported.
Investigators found 120 gallons of liquid meth in the truck’s tank, the news outlet reported, citing Harnett County Sheriff Wayne Coats. That amount reportedly equates to 454 kilograms of crystal meth.
Both men were being held at the county jail on a $3 million bond, sheriff’s office records showed.
An immigration detainer, according to WTVD, was issued for Pineda and immigration officials with ICE were trying to determine Arreola’s current immigration status. [Source: Fox News]
That’s a pretty gutsy move, smuggling meth inside a dirty fuel tank. It makes you wonder about the quality of illegal drugs in this country. Can’t an addict expect to buy meth that’s not contaminated by gasoline?
You also have to wonder where these two men got their hands on so much meth. $90 million worth isn’t a tiny amount. Are they behind a larger operation? Did they make it themselves? Maybe this is a real-word Breaking Bad situation. Perhaps the cops should investigate area chemistry teachers.
Another newsworthy thing to note is the country of origin of these two truckers. According to police, ICE is involved. They are trying to determine the immigration status of Arreola. If it turns out that he’s an illegal alien, the case takes on a whole new dimension.
We know drug cartels smuggle narcotics across the border all the time. It’s one of biggest threats at the Southern border. It’s very likely this was a new scheme, cooked up by dealers, to sneak meth into the country. My only question left is: how were they going to get far, with a tank full of meth?
