The International Brotherhood of Teamsters on Wednesday announced it did not endorse a candidate for president, despite releasing internal polling that showed a majority of its membership supported former President Trump.
Sean O’Brien, President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, spoke on stage during the first day of the Republican National Convention at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee on July 15.
Prior to the announcement, the Teamsters had shared the results of its own polling on the 2024 candidates. The data revealed that in an online survey, 59.6% of union members favored Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris, who received 34%. A phone survey similarly showed Teamsters favoring Trump over Harris by 58% to 31%.
The data indicated a surge in Trump’s support among Teamsters since Harris took over from President Biden at the head of the Democratic ticket. Before Biden’s withdrawal, polling showed Biden leading Trump among members by 44.3% to 36.3%.
In its statement explaining the decision not to endorse for the 2024 election, the union noted, “The union’s extensive member polling showed no majority support for Vice President Harris and no universal support among the membership for President Trump.”
