The Georgia special election for the 6th Congressional District seat has been called early for Republican Karen Handel.
The media obsession with the race ensured that millions of campaign donations would pour in. It quickly entered into the history books for the most money spent on a House race, with over $50 million from both sides.
According to the statistics website FiveThirtyEight, Ossoff was leading Handel by five points just a week before the election.
Election watchers saw Handel jump ahead early on, which spelled trouble for Ossoff as the first precincts were supposed to lean Democrat.
Liberals were hoping that the election would show a turn away from the many scandals and questions surrounding the Trump administration, but others noted that these kind of elections aren’t good predictors for the midterm races.
