If ever there was a reason to implement a second special counsel, this is it.
Rep. Ron DeSantis explained that we need a second special counsel because the DOJ can’t “investigate themselves.”
Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., argued Monday that a second special counsel will ultimately be needed to examine why the Justice Department launched its investigation into President Trump because the department has shown it can’t investigate itself.
“I don’t think that the Justice Department’s going to be able to investigate themselves,” DeSantis said on Fox News. “I think that they’ve resisted our inquiries here in Congress for long enough, and so it’s time that we did have a special counsel.”
DeSantis and other Republicans have been pressing for information about the origins of the Trump investigation for months, and only this week finally won an assurance that White House chief of staff John Kelly would get lawmakers the information they’ve been seeking. Among other things, lawmakers have been pushing for information on whether an informant within the Trump campaign was getting information to the FBI.
“I think John Kelly will be able to get these guys in line,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis said the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General is not enough, since the IG can’t subpoena witnesses.
“We in the Congress need the information, and you also need the special counsel,” he said.
DeSantis predicted that people would eventually get the full picture of how the FBI came to investigate Trump.
“I think so, and we’re working hard to make sure that that happens,” he said.
