Special counsel David Weiss has indicated his intention to indict Hunter Biden on gun-related charges by the end of September, as confirmed by a court filing. The filing stated that the government is required to obtain a grand jury indictment by September 29, 2023, at the earliest, in accordance with the Speedy Trial Act.
The charges stem from Hunter Biden’s alleged falsification of information on a federal form when purchasing a handgun in 2018, during a period when he admitted to being a drug user. Initially, a plea deal had been proposed that would have involved Hunter pleading guilty to misdemeanor tax violations and entering into a pre-trial diversion agreement in exchange for immunity from a felony gun charge. However, district judge Maryellen Noreika rejected this deal, citing concerns about the broad immunity offered to Hunter.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed David Weiss as a special counsel to oversee the ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden without the typical oversight of the Department of Justice. Following the collapse of the initial plea deal, a future trial is expected, and Hunter Biden’s former lawyer, Christopher Clark, withdrew from the case, citing his potential role as a witness in the upcoming trial.
