He interpreted this term as a veiled racist insult, suggesting that critics used it as a proxy to express more overtly racist sentiments.
Scott’s response to these attacks is rooted in a deep sense of identity and resilience, informed by the historical struggles of his ancestors. He sees the use of “DEI” (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) as a term weaponized by some to undermine and devalue his achievements and the broader goals of social equity. Former Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake shared similar experiences of race-based attacks during her term, highlighting a pattern of racial adversity faced by Black public officials in Baltimore. This pattern points to a deeper societal issue where Black leaders are often scrutinized more harshly and held to different standards, especially when they are vocal about racial justice and community improvement.
Scott’s personal encounters with racism, including being subjected to racial slurs and threats, highlight the systemic and individual racism that persists in society. These experiences, ranging from verbal abuse to threats of violence, illustrate the severe and personal nature of the racism that Black public officials, like Scott, navigate. They serve as a stark reminder of the racial prejudices deeply ingrained in parts of the American societal fabric.
