Vice President Kamala Harris has enlisted President Joe Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chávez Rodriguez, and chair, Jen O’Malley Dillon, to lead her 2024 campaign. The decision has been met with skepticism from some in the media, who question the effectiveness of Biden’s previous campaign against former President Donald Trump. Pollster Nate Silver commented, “It’s not good news for Democrats to put the people who ran the Biden campaign into the ground in charge.”
Harris appears to be banking on the Biden-Harris administration’s record, which includes policies on immigration, rising costs, and foreign policy challenges. During her first appearance since entering the Democratic primary race, Harris praised Biden’s accomplishments, stating, “Joe Biden’s legacy of accomplishment over the past three years is unmatched in modern history,” and urged the audience to applaud.
Dillon, who joined Biden’s team after working on Beto O’Rourke’s campaign in 2020, was a strong advocate for Biden staying in the race despite calls for him to withdraw. Rodriguez, granddaughter of labor leader César Chávez, worked in the Obama administration and previously served as Harris’s state senate director before joining Biden’s 2020 campaign.
Harris is also seeking to hire more advisors from the Obama era, including David Plouffe, a senior adviser to former President Barack Obama, as reported by Politico. Other seasoned Democratic strategists like Minyon Moore and Donna Brazile provide regular counsel to Harris, although it is unclear if they will formally join her campaign team. Plouffe, who managed Obama’s 2008 campaign, is noted for his expertise and connections with many of Biden’s current advisors.
According to longtime Democratic adviser Doug Sosnik, seven key states—Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and North Carolina—will be crucial in deciding the 2024 presidential election. If Trump secures victories in any of the major states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, or Wisconsin, Harris’s path to obtaining 270 electoral votes becomes more challenging.
Harris faces significant hurdles among voters. Her policies and candidacy may struggle to gain traction in traditional Democratic strongholds, and she may not resonate with voters in the Sunbelt states, which have more diverse and younger populations. A Quinnipiac poll released on Monday indicates that Harris has a 55 percent unfavorable rating among voters aged 18-34, highlighting the challenges she may face in attracting support from younger demographics.
