President Joe Biden’s widely criticized debate performance has seemingly intensified tensions between the establishment media and the White House press team. This friction became evident after Biden’s debate performance led to questions about his cognitive abilities, which the media, once accused by Republicans of shielding Biden, have begun to scrutinize more aggressively.
On Saturday, Axios’s Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen reported that Biden’s debate performance confirmed the decline that many establishment media reporters had previously overlooked.
The conflict reached a peak on Monday when White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre deflected questions about multiple visits by a Parkinson’s expert to the White House in 2023, citing security and privacy concerns. This response, reported by Axios, left many reporters dissatisfied. Jean-Pierre’s refusal to provide details, and her assertion that it was a privacy issue, contrasted with the later release of a letter from Biden’s doctor, which stated that the president has never been diagnosed with or treated for Parkinson’s. The letter explained that the expert’s visits were part of a general neurology practice for supporting White House operations.
Reporters expressed a preference for Jean-Pierre’s predecessor, Jen Psaki, citing her alleged adeptness at handling sensitive questions. White House spokesman Andrew Bates defended Jean-Pierre, stating she handles difficult questions daily with thorough answers and represents Biden’s agenda with integrity.
The strained relationship between the White House communication staff and the media, especially with the New York Times, continues to be problematic. The Times has been denied interviews with Biden, which the paper sees as essential to assess his fitness for office. According to Politico’s Eli Stokols, Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger believes that only such an interview can verify Biden’s capability to serve as president.
