Nobody noticed what Bill Brazier was up to as he made his way from Mississippi to Texas until drivers along a desolate stretch of his path saw something that didn’t seem right. Two police officers were called out to the scene, stopping Bill en route, but they were sickened when they discovered what happened along that 440-mile route.
Sgt. Laura Potts of the Shreveport Police Department responded to an individual’s frantic call when they saw what the 70-year-old was doing in the dark. Having little to go on, Potts had no clue what she was about to get into when she arrived but acted fast as soon as she found out where he had come from.
Bill was reportedly hitchhiking, which apparently made several motorists feel nervous, especially since the elderly man was barely able to stand. As he slowly wobbled along the road with his head hanging down, there was something distinctly different about this homeless man. Potts stopped him and asked where he was going when he opened up with a shocking admission that left her heartbroken.
According to ArkLaTex, Bill explained that he was just trying to get home to Fort Worth, Texas after working in Jackson, Mississippi. His only option was to walk the 440 miles. Along the way, he was robbed by a pack of thugs who took all of his money and left him injured on top of the ailments he was also struggling with. All he had left was the will to get home, even if it required that he walk what’s typically a 6-hour drive.
Hearing his harrowing story, Potts couldn’t let this man continue down this road since he still had almost the entire distance to go. To make his trek easier, she decided to get a bus ticket for Bill but didn’t stop there. “I put out an all call for the troops and out of the goodness of our hearts everybody ponied up and we got him a bus ticket and some extra money for food and water so we know he will be safe when he gets back home” the Sgt. explained.
For Potts, knowing that this forgotten man, who is someone’s son, brother, father, and possibly grandfather, is safe and comfortable and that she won’t have to respond to an accident with him as the victim, made it worth every penny. Rather than citing him for being a public nuisance or leaving him to figure out his own circumstances, she genuinely showed how much she cared by being a solution.
