A tragic plane crash shook Philadelphia on Friday evening, Jan. 31, 2025, when a medical transport Learjet 55 plummeted into a residential neighborhood just 30 seconds after takeoff from Northeast Philadelphia Airport. The aircraft, en route to Springfield-Branson National Airport and ultimately Tijuana, Mexico, erupted into a fireball upon impact near the intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard and Cottman Avenue, engulfing multiple homes in flames. The six people onboard included a young girl returning to Mexico after receiving life-saving medical treatment in the U.S., her mother, a doctor, a paramedic, the pilot, and copilot. Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, the operator of the Learjet, stated that they could not confirm any survivors. On the ground, at least six individuals were treated for injuries at a local hospital, with no immediate word on fatalities among residents.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation, and an official was already on-site Friday night, with more investigators arriving Saturday. Footage from the scene captured the jet’s catastrophic descent and explosion, highlighting the devastating aftermath as emergency responders battled the flames and treated victims. A shelter was established at Samuel Fels High School to provide temporary assistance to displaced residents. As authorities piece together the cause of the crash, the incident has left the city reeling, with questions surrounding the jet’s mechanical condition and flight operations expected to be key points in the investigation.
