New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has provided initial details on the devastating ramming attack that claimed the lives of 10 people and injured 30 others early on New Year’s Day at the intersection of Bourbon and Iberville Streets in the historic French Quarter. Describing the incident as a “terrorist attack,” Cantrell noted that the FBI is now leading the investigation alongside local authorities. Witnesses reported a chaotic scene where a truck was driven at high speed into a crowd of revelers before the driver exited the vehicle and began firing a weapon, prompting police to return fire. Superintendent of Police Anne Kirkpatrick confirmed that the attacker’s intention was to cause maximum harm, stating, “This man was trying to run over as many people as he could.” Two police officers were struck by gunfire but are in stable condition. Despite CBS News reporting the FBI’s immediate involvement, an FBI official speaking at a press briefing declined to officially label the incident as terrorism, leaving questions about the driver’s identity, motives, and current condition unanswered. The attack occurred around 3:15 a.m., with videos circulating on social media showing injured victims lying on the ground as gunfire echoed in the background.
