Famed artist, singer, and songwriter Kanye West recently went on a tweeting rampage where he discussed his political views as well as expressed support for President Trump. Trump has utilized this to his advantage and even referenced his support during a National Rifle Association speech he hosted at an event. Now, Democrats are freaking out because they have one less Hollywood entertainer on their side to spew their overused talking points.
“President Trump praised Kanye West on Friday, saying that the rapper “must have some power” as the president touted what he said was a surge in support amongst African-Americans.
The comments came during the president’s remarks at National Rifle’s Association annual convention in Dallas, more than a week since West, in mid-tweetstorm, said there was “dragon energy” between him and his “brother” Trump.
“And by the way, Kanye West must have some power because you probably saw, I doubled my African-American poll numbers,” Trump told the crowd in remarks that also touched on g*n rights, job gains and unemployment. “We went from 11 to 22 in one week. Thank you, Kanye. Thank you.”
“When I saw the numbers I said there must be a mistake. How can that happen?” Trump continued. “Even the pollsters thought there must be a mistake.” Trump’s Friday comments appeared to be in line with findings in a recent Reuters poll, according to The Washington Times. The April 29 poll found that 22 percent of African-American males approved of Trump’s performance in the White House, whereas a week earlier, his rating stood at 11 percent, according to the report.
In an array of tweets in late April, West talked about a wide range of topics, but he eventually pivoted to politics. “You don’t have to agree with trump but the mob can’t make me not love him,” West tweeted. “We are both dragon energy. He is my brother. I love everyone. I don’t agree with everything anyone does. That’s what makes us individuals. And we have the right to independent thought.”
“If your friend jumps off the bridge you don’t have to do the same,” West continued. “Ye being Ye is a fight for you to be you. For people In my life the idea of Trump is pretty much a 50 50 split but I don’t tell a Hillary supporter to not support Hillary. I love Hillary too.” The rapper, who is also famously married to Kim Kardashian, also shared a photo of a “Make America Great Again” hat, which appeared to have been signed by the president. At the time, Trump took to Twitter to thank the rapper for the praise, adding “very cool!””
Kanye also made headlines and stirred controversy for posting text messages with his friends and family on his social media outlets without their permission. In addition, he went and did an interview with TMZ where he said that African Americans are enslaved to the Democratic party and that slavery was a choice. He later clarified that he meant blacks were “mentally” enslaved. Both Republicans and Democrats came out and spoke against his latter comments regarding slavery insisting that slavery was not a choice.
In retaliation CNN reported,
“A Nigerian senator has invited American rapper Kanye West to visit slave ports in Africa for an education on the slave trade. Nigeria’s vocal lawmaker Shehu Sani took a dig at West on Friday saying the musician’s statements on transatlantic slave trade was a slight on its victims. “If Kanye West thinks slavery was a choice, we will offer him a free ticket and tour guide to visit slave routes and camps in Badagry, Lagos, Ouida, Benin Republic, Ghana and Goree Island in Senegal to ‘experience the choices in chains. Kanye defecated on the graves of victims,” Shehu said in a tweet.
The lawmaker was referring to relics in the coast of West Africa where people were enslaved and sold to the Americas. A Detroit based radio station on Thursday said it was pulling off the rapper’s songs following his comments. West tried to clarify his statements Tuesday amidst mounting backlash. “[T]o make myself clear. Of course I know that slaves did not get shackled and put on a boat by free will. My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved,” West said in a tweet. The rapper said he was being attacked “for presenting new ideas.””
Regardless, Kanye is turning heads and making people think twice. Whether people like him or not for it is irrelevant.
