Kamala Harris’s inability to effectively address the administration’s failures at the border stems from the fact that there is simply no good answer to give. While she may try to sound deliberate and stick to her talking points, the reality is that the administration’s handling of immigration has been a disaster, and there’s no plausible explanation that can excuse it. Now, after three years of an ongoing border crisis, Harris is attempting to rebrand herself as a border hawk, conveniently disregarding her previous radical positions and attempting to place the blame on GOP obstruction. This pivot, however, comes across as insincere, as she attempts to distance herself from the very policies that created the crisis, while failing to offer a coherent explanation for her newfound stance. Ultimately, Harris’s unconvincing rhetoric on the border reflects not a communication problem, but a calculated strategy to obscure the administration’s role in creating an entirely avoidable crisis.
