Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) spoke out on Wednesday following President-elect Donald Trump’s controversial choice of former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) for attorney general, predicting that Gaetz’s nomination would face an uphill battle in the Senate. In an interview with Bloomberg Television, McCarthy praised most of Trump’s Cabinet picks but was quick to express doubt about Gaetz’s chances: “Gaetz won’t get confirmed. Everybody knows that,” he said bluntly.

When asked why Trump would nominate Gaetz if his confirmation seemed unlikely, McCarthy offered a vague response, suggesting it could be a strategic move by Trump. “You’d have to ask the president,” McCarthy remarked, adding, “Gaetz couldn’t even win support in a Republican conference, so it doesn’t matter.”

The tension between McCarthy and Gaetz has been well documented, dating back to Gaetz’s leading role in the campaign to remove McCarthy from the Speakership last October. McCarthy, who stepped down from his House seat late last year, has consistently argued that Gaetz’s actions were motivated by a personal ethics complaint rather than genuine political differences.

McCarthy’s skepticism mirrors concerns voiced by several Senate Republicans, who were caught off guard by Trump’s announcement of Gaetz’s nomination. Many GOP senators are reportedly wary, particularly given the lingering cloud of the Justice Department’s investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against Gaetz. Though the investigation was closed without charges, the accusations remain a source of controversy.

Further complicating Gaetz’s path to confirmation is the House Ethics Committee’s probe into allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. Although Gaetz’s resignation from the House ended the committee’s jurisdiction, it retains the option to release its findings, potentially adding another layer of scrutiny to the already contentious nomination process.
