Kamala Harris’ campaign strategy in 2024 contrasts sharply with Joe Biden’s “basement campaign” of 2020, where he largely stayed out of the public eye. Harris is now engaging with enthusiastic crowds and aligning herself with prominent cultural trends, effectively clapping back at Donald Trump. However, despite this apparent transformation, there are underlying concerns about her ability to perform unscripted.
Unlike Biden, who conducted numerous interviews even while avoiding large crowds, Harris is heavily reliant on teleprompters to avoid unscripted moments that might expose weaknesses. This strategy aims to maintain the media bubble that has been constructed around her, similar to Biden’s pre-debate approach this year, which sought to protect him from challenging settings.
Harris’ issue isn’t about forgetting names or dates, but rather a tendency to repeat the same banal ideas in slightly varied words, leading to a loop of vacuous statements. For instance, in one of her rare off-script moments, she credited Biden for a prisoner swap by repeating phrases like “understands diplomacy” and “strength” without effectively conveying a clear message.
Despite being a visible presence at rallies, Harris has yet to articulate her stance on recent significant events or her multiple policy changes since her last presidential run. Her campaign has managed to avoid substantial media scrutiny over these shifts, a feat that would be remarkable for any candidate.
Eventually, Harris will need to face the media. The campaign might opt for controlled interviews with friendly outlets like MSNBC or influencers, and later, a relatively safe interview with a reputable journalist such as Lesley Stahl of 60 Minutes. Until then, the reliance on scripted speeches will continue.
This situation underscores a broader issue within the Democratic Party: having back-to-back presidential candidates who are shielded from unscripted interactions. This is why Trump insists on debating Harris. His strategy in the Biden debates was to allow Biden to make mistakes, and he hopes to do the same with Harris, given her avoidance of the media.
Although Harris is actively campaigning, her inability to go off script remains a significant concern.
