Jaelynn Chaney, a 27-year-old plus-size travel influencer, has accused an airport employee at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport of discrimination after refusing to push her in a wheelchair due to her weight. Chaney, who frequently requests wheelchair assistance, recounted her ordeal on TikTok, stating that the employee walked away upon realizing she had to assist a plus-size passenger rather than a smaller individual.
“My ordeal at SeaTac Airport will shock you,” Chaney, from Vancouver, Washington, said in her TikTok video. Chaney, who can walk but requested assistance as she typically does on flights, detailed how the wheelchair assistant began making comments about her size and ignored her pleas for help.
The incident left Chaney struggling for air, as she was forced to walk up one of the longest jet bridges she had encountered. By the time she reached the wheelchair and sat down, Chaney claimed her lips had turned white, her oxygen levels had dropped, and she nearly fainted.
“Staying silent isn’t an option anymore,” Chaney said, highlighting the discrimination she faced. “If you’ve faced something similar, you’re not alone. Discrimination is real, and I don’t want anybody else to ever experience something like this.”
Support poured in from her followers, with comments expressing sympathy and solidarity. “I’m so sorry, honey,” one user wrote, while another added, “Sending positivity! No one should be discriminated against for their body or abilities.”
Chaney, known for her advocacy for plus-size travelers, has previously called for airlines to provide free extra seats for larger passengers, subsidized by slimmer travelers. She argues that the “passenger of size” policy is a basic human right, though it may necessitate higher fares for other passengers.
This incident marked Chaney’s first time traveling without supplemental oxygen, a significant milestone she documented on TikTok. She explained that she had required an oxygen apparatus since 2019 after doctors suspected she had a stroke, which was later diagnosed as pulmonary hypertension necessitating oxygen therapy.
