Warner Bros. Discovery’s CNN plans to lay off hundreds of employees as it shifts focus toward a global digital audience, according to sources.

These layoffs are part of CNN’s effort to restructure its TV programming and develop new digital subscription products. The cuts aim to reduce production costs and streamline teams, said the sources, who spoke anonymously about the changes.

Some shows currently produced in New York or Washington may be relocated to Atlanta, where production costs are lower. However, the layoffs are not expected to impact CNN’s most prominent on-air personalities, as they are under contract. CNN currently employs about 3,500 people worldwide.

Earlier this month, CNN CEO Mark Thompson announced during a town hall meeting that Warner Bros. Discovery has invested over $70 million in CNN’s digital operations. The funding will support hiring in areas like data science and product development, where the company sees opportunities for growth.
