Wrongly Deported Man Won’t Be Freed, Bukele Says

In an Oval Office meeting with President Trump on Monday, President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador said that he would not return a Maryland man who was wrongly deported from the U.S. and sent to a notorious Salvadoran prison.

“Of course I’m not going to do it,” Bukele said when reporters asked if he was willing to help return the man, Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old father of three who was deported last month.

Trump also mused about the possibility of sending U.S. citizens convicted of violent crimes to prison in El Salvador, although he said Attorney General Pam Bondi was still studying the legality of the proposal. #Trump #elsalvador

ICE Detains Student Activist Arriving at Citizenship Interview

Mohsen Mahdawi, a Columbia student activist who is a legal permanent resident, was detained by immigration officials on Monday after arriving for an appointment in Vermont that he thought was a step toward becoming a U.S. citizen, his lawyers said.

Hours later, Mahdawi’s mother, older sister and lawyers were scrambling to find him after his abrupt detention at an immigration center in Vermont. His lawyers requested a temporary restraining order to prevent federal officials from transferring him to a more conservative jurisdiction — a tactic used to deport other college demonstrators.

A federal judge swiftly granted that request, ordering that Mahdawi, an outspoken critic of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, not be removed from the U.S. or transferred out of Vermont until he orders otherwise. His lawyers said that as of Monday afternoon, they had confirmed that he was still in Vermont.
