Joe Biden’s presidency hit yet another jaw-dropping low as he issued a pardon for his son, Hunter Biden, sparking outrage and disbelief across the nation. With just a few weeks left in what many consider a disastrous administration, Biden decided to blatantly contradict his repeated promises that “no one is above the law” and granted clemency to his son for federal offenses committed between January 1, 2014, and December 1, 2024. This act has left countless Americans furious—not only for its hypocrisy but for its glaring double standards. While January 6 defendants languish in prison, enduring harsh sentences and public vilification, Hunter Biden is handed a lifeline, despite convictions for federal gun and tax crimes.
This move isn’t as sweeping as some outlets, like *The New York Times*, misleadingly suggested. The pardon only covers federal offenses, as outlined in Article II, Section 2, Clause 1 of the Constitution, and does not shield Hunter from state-level charges or civil lawsuits. Still, the timing and scope of the pardon reek of political maneuvering, allowing Biden to shield his son from further scrutiny while maintaining a pretense of integrity in his final days in office.
Biden’s press statement attempted to rationalize the pardon, blaming Hunter’s prosecution on “raw politics” and claiming his son was treated unfairly because of his last name. Yet, no amount of spin can mask the glaring hypocrisy: this is the same Joe Biden who weaponized the Department of Justice to relentlessly target his political rivals, including former President Donald Trump. While Biden cheered on partisan prosecutors like Letitia James and Alvin Bragg in their legal crusades against Trump, he shamelessly turned around and used his presidential authority to save his own son. It’s a stark contrast to his lofty rhetoric about “justice” and “accountability.”
