Vice President Harris’s running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, has expressed a desire to ban military-style guns, including those he “carried in war,” despite never having seen combat during his service in the Army National Guard. Walz, who joined the Guard in 1981 and retired in 2005 as a command sergeant major, left the service just as his unit was being deployed to Iraq.
“I spent 25 years in the Army, and I hunt. I’ve been voting for commonsense legislation that protects the Second Amendment, but we can do background checks. We can research the impacts of gun violence. We can make sure those weapons of war that I carried in war are only carried in war,” Walz said in a video posted by the Harris campaign on Tuesday.
Despite his lengthy service, Walz never experienced combat, a fact he acknowledged in a 2018 interview with Minnesota Public Radio. “I know that there are certainly folks that did far more than I did. I willingly say that I got far more out of the military than they got out of me,” he stated, referencing benefits like the GI Bill and leadership opportunities.
Walz retired shortly after his battalion received a deployment order to Iraq, which led to criticism from fellow service member Thomas Behrends, who accused him of avoiding duty. “When your country calls, you are supposed to run into battle, not the other way,” Behrends told the New York Post, labeling Walz a “traitor” and “coward.”
After retiring from the military, Walz ran for Congress, winning his seat and taking office in 2007. During his congressional tenure from 2006 to 2019, Walz represented a rural district and supported the Second Amendment, earning accolades from pro-gun groups like the NRA, which awarded him an A rating.
Walz’s recent calls for gun control have sparked backlash, especially given his previous remarks and portrayal as a gun advocate. Critics on social media and various platforms have questioned his authenticity and pointed out the discrepancies in his statements regarding his military experience and stance on gun ownership.
