A new report from NPR reveals that Democrats are increasingly embracing the nickname “Tampon Tim” for Kamala Harris’s running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, despite its controversial connotations. The moniker originated after Walz signed a law requiring tampons to be placed in both girls’ and boys’ bathrooms in Minnesota schools, a move that Republicans quickly criticized. As Breitbart News reported, Republicans attacked Walz for yielding to what they termed the “woke insistence” that not all menstruating students are female. Minnesota State Representative Sandra Feist supported the bill by highlighting the necessity of providing menstrual products to all students.

According to NPR, while the initiative to stock girls’ bathrooms with tampons is widely supported, the legislation’s inclusive language, which mandates availability “to all menstruating students in restrooms regularly used by students,” has faced scrutiny. Some Minnesota Republicans attempted to restrict the provision to female-assigned and gender-neutral bathrooms but were ultimately unsuccessful. Even the author of the amendment to limit the bill voted in favor of the final version, citing personal importance.

The bill’s inclusive approach acknowledges that not all women menstruate and not all menstruating individuals identify as female, reflecting the needs of a diverse student population. Despite the controversy, some Democrats have embraced the “Tampon Tim” nickname as a badge of progressive values. Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton expressed support, sarcastically thanking the Trump camp for publicizing Walz’s policy. Democratic Minnesota Representative Sandra Feist, the bill’s chief sponsor, defended the legislation on social media with the hashtag #TamponTim, highlighting the importance of addressing students’ needs.

Former Georgia State Representative Bee Nguyen emphasized the significance of the law in combating period poverty and its positive impact on educational outcomes, praising Walz’s understanding of such issues as a former teacher. A Washington Post columnist even suggested that boys carrying menstrual products could become popular, though this view was met with some ridicule.
