The Power Of Positive Thoughts, Intentions, And Affirmations

“Miracles are not contrary to nature but only contrary to what we know about nature. ” – Saint Augustine
I will always remember one science experiment that I did as a young girl in middle school. In the experiment, I planted 30 seeds – unfortunately, I don’t remember the exact type of seed, but if my mind serves me correctly, I believe they were a type of bean. The 30 seeds were then divided into 3 groups of ten. To keep variables at a minimum, the soil in which they were planted and the water they were given were measured and always equal. The plants sat on a desk in front of a bay window in my room – 10 each on 3 different cookie sheets, which I rotated daily to be certain none were getting a better supply of sunlight.

The experiment was inspired by a vine plant that a relative had that seemed to grow at an abnormal rate, sprawling all across the room it inhabited. Assuming the owner had a green thumb, I remember asking her secret to growing such a beautiful, impressive plant and was surprised by her answer. She said, “I talk to it. I tell it every day how beautiful it is to me.” She saw the surprised look on my face and warned, “You must be nice. If you are mean to it, it will die.”
When charged with the assignment to do a science experiment for the school science fair, I decided to put the theory to the test. For my experiment, one group of 10 would not be spoken to at all – called the silent group, one group of 10 would endure 5 minutes per day of hateful and negative berating – called the bad group, while the third group would be praised for 5 minutes per day – called the good group. For a month, I would take the good group into another room and speak positive affirmations and then return it to the desk in my room and take the bad group to another room to be scolded and yelled at for whatever random insult that would pop into my head. The silent group was not spoken to, but still taken to the other room for 5 minutes to sit quietly – this was the control group.

In over 20 years, I have never forgotten the results. The control group grew to 4 – 6 inches. The group of plants that were praised all grew to over one foot. The group that was verbally abused never broke the soil – not a single sprout out of the group of 10.
Interestingly, I recently discovered the results of a similar experiment done using rice and water by Dr. Masaru Emoto, a researcher and alternative healer from Japan.

As always, scientific evidence should be able to be replicated, so here’s another’s results of the same experiment:

Dr. Masaru Emoto’s research has demonstrated that human thoughts and intentions can alter physical reality, such as the molecular structure of water – a very thought provoking concept, considering the human body is composed of at least 60% water.

Regardless of the science behind the results, these experiments should cause one to consider the effects our thoughts, intentions, and affirmations could have on ourselves and the persons and things around us. Even if you don’t agree that there is power in positive thinking, it is evident that there is definitely no harm in it.
