With decency on the decline and depravity on the rise, much of what used to be considered “helicopter parenting” is now necessary to keep children away from predators. Some of what-what parents have to do to keep their children safe is about saving them from others, and some of it is about saving them from themselves.
When a child is small, a parent thinks nothing of slapping their hands away from a hot burner on the stove, but should parents be slapping their children’s’ hands away from the internet and the plethora of dangers that await there. Despite the increase in accessibility of information that is available for children to understand about dangers, there’s no replacement for age, experience and good sense.
If anyone needed additional proof that teens and pre-teens don’t have the good sense to keep themselves, safe, the recent internet “challenges” that are poisoning and asphyxiating children who attempt to go viral should be all the proof one needs that children cannot be depended on to make good decisions without guidance.
Unfortunately, one Florida family is dealing with that very problem after it was discovered that their 14-year-old went in search of a prostitute online, and ended up finding one. According to the Daily Mail, the person he found was a 28-year-old Scottish woman who was willing to meet with the minor and take him to her hotel room:
“Scottish woman, 28, is arrested in Florida after having ‘sex with a 14-year-old boy who paid her $480 after he found her online while searching for prostitutes’

After they had sex, the victim said he paid McGill $480 in mixed denominations of $50’s and $20’s for her services and left the room.
Police said after speaking with the boy and his father, authorities went to the same hotel room and found McGill there with another man.
They allegedly found condom wrappers, cash and unused condoms inside a safe in her room.
Both the victim and McGill were interviewed by detectives at Orlando Police Department.
McGill was then arrested and charged with lewd or lascivious battery.
She was bonded from Orange County Jail on Monday but was ordered not to have any contact with the victim or engage in any online activity.
McGill was also ordered to turn over her UK passport to ensure she remains in Florida.”
It’s as yet unknown what will happen to McGill, but the boy is no doubt going to be treated as an innocent in the situation. Many question whether the age of consent is placed at the correct threshold in the United States. While it’s up to scientists and phycologist to debate the merits of the current age of consent, it is likely not even debatable that a 14-year-old is too young to be making lifelong choices like this for themselves.
Television, the internet, and social media have no doubt opened up the minds of children to many influences that they would normally never even be aware of. However, blaming influences like that are not enough to keep children safe. It’s possible that parents should consider parental controls on anything connected to the world wide web, and confiscate any video games with things like prostitutes in them. Children will only pretend to do something for so long before they try to go do it in real life.
