Turkey Protests Grow as Erdogan Rival Is Jailed

Protesters in Turkey’s largest cities turned out for demonstrations in support of the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, on Sunday. Police had arrested Imamoglu at his home on accusations of corruption and terrorism on Wednesday, just days before he was set to be designated as the political opposition’s presidential candidate, and he was jailed on Sunday pending his trial. Opponents of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan — who has dominated Turkish politics for more than two decades — say he is trying to prevent a top political rival from running for president.
