The country has been rocked by clashes between the opposition and the government of President Nicolás Maduro, who, despite deadly protests, promises to hold national elections on Sunday.

Since April 2017, hundreds of people have died in clashes between opposition and Venezuelan government. Clashes began after the National Assembly was stripped over its power by the Supreme Court, a pro-government group. President Nicolas Maduro has proposed a new government body, essentially moving toward a system similar to Cuba.
