Watch a Tense Pool Scene From ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’ | Anatomy of a Scene

This early scene from the satire-thriller “Bodies Bodies Bodies” takes a deep breath before introducing its cast.

Soon after the sequence begins, it heads underwater, with the characters emerging to find that Sophie (Amandla Stenberg) has arrived at (or crashed?) their party.

Narrating the underwater segment, the director, Halina Reijn, said she wanted to use womblike imagery for the first view of the ensemble.

“They’re like embryos floating,” she said. “It’s an abstraction, and then we know that they’re going to be born, and they turn out to be monsters later.”

Reijn said that the most intimidating part of making the film was handling a large cast and so many group scenes. To prepare, she said she went to the mansion where they shot before the actors arrived and blocked out scenes with her cinematographer, experimenting and even acting out parts herself.
