[L’Osservatore Romano] The world is grappling with “a wave of xenophobia, racism and intolerance” and human rights “are losing ground globally.” This is the alarm launched today by the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, in his opening speech of the Council for Human Rights UN in Geneva.
Guterres expressed in alarm at what he called “a narrowing of the civic space”, pointing out that in the last three years have been killed more than 1,000 journalists and activists for human rights. “Hate is moving into the mainstream, in democracies and authoritarian systems”, he explained the Secretary General of the United Nations, calling on member states to contribute to build “a new global strategy to combat incitement to hatred ». Xenophobia and racism are “a growing scourge which has poisoned the debate on the key challenges like immigration.” Some major political parties and leaders “are cutting and pasting ideas from the margins of society for their own electoral propaganda.”
