This week’s Op-Doc is Paul Szynol’s “The Pull,” a searing exploration of the inner life of John Bixby, a New Hampshire man struggling with drug addiction. Beginning just before Bixby’s release from jail, the film follows his lonely journey across the ghostly landscape of New England’s opioid crisis. As Szynol writes, Bixby’s story is “an agonizing battle between his desire to use and his stiff but weakening resolve to stay clean.” The result is a lyrical tale of hope and disappointment, told without judgment, with glimpses of astonishing vulnerability.
