A story of true love and endurance can be found even in tragedy. As is the case for Peggy Harris, a WWII widow who continued to search for her husband for 68 years until his remains were finally found.
The story began on Sept. 22, 1943, when Billie D. Harris married a young, pretty, Texas girl by the name of Peggy Seale. Little did the couple know that the month after they wed would be the last time they would ever see one another alive. Six weeks after the wedding, Billie was sent overseas, where he went missing. It would be 68 years before his death and his final place of rest would be confirmed for Peggy.
One wonders how Peggy remained dutiful to her husband for so many years after such a short marriage. She explains, “Billie was married to me all of his life, and I choose to be married to him all of my life.” Peggy’s word are a testimony of true love.
As if finally finding out what had happened to her husband after her 68 year search wasn’t blessing enough, Peggy was delighted and comforted to hear that Billie had died a hero and continues to be honored to this day in a town in France. The community of Les Ventes in the Normandy region dedicated an area “Place Billie D. Harris.” Not only was Peggy finally able to visit the town that honors her husband and her husband’s grave, she was reunited with the only witness of her husband’s death that is still living.
