🎙️MKULTRA was a covert CIA research program launched in 1953 during the Cold War, driven by fears that rival powers had developed advanced interrogation and psychological manipulation techniques. Authorized under CIA Director Allen Dulles, it aimed to determine whether human perception, memory, and behavior could be altered for intelligence purposes. Over two decades, MKULTRA expanded into more than 100 subprojects across universities, hospitals, prisons, military facilities, and private research settings, often without informed consent. Experiments included LSD and other drugs, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, sleep deprivation, isolation, and extreme psychological stress. The program yielded no reliable mind control methods but caused significant harm. It was halted in 1973 and later exposed through congressional investigations, though many records were destroyed.
