Inspired by the Parkland shooting, officials in Deerfield, Illinois, said assault weapons are “not reasonably necessary to protect an individual’s right or self-defense.”

Village Board of Trustees members in Deerfield, Illinois, a suburb north of Chicago, voted Monday night to ban the possession, sale, and manufacture of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in their community.
After the February high school shooting that killed 17 students and staff in Parkland, Florida, Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal “directed staff and the Village attorney to prepare a report concerning the implementation of a ban of assault weapons,” according to a press release.

“I believe the time has now come to revisit a complete ban of assault weapons,” Rosenthal said.
On Monday night, the Deerfield Village Board unanimously approved the ban of assault weapons that will be effective starting June 13.

The explicitly defines what constitutes an assault weapon, including semiautomatic rifles with a fixed magazine and a capacity to fit more than 10 rounds of ammunition, as well as shotguns with revolving cylinders, among others.

The ordinance also lists specific models, including the AR-15 and AK-47, to be banned.
A violation of the ban — i.e., any resident who does not give up their assault weapons by June 13 — will be fined up to $1,000 a day for each offense, the town said.

Anyone in violation, and fined, could also be forced to “forfeit to the Village any assault weapon,” the ordinance states.

The legislation is likely to face a legal challenge on constitutional grounds, but Village Manager Kent Street told the Chicago Tribune the ordinance was modeled on a Highland Park, Illinois, law from 2013 that survived in court.
The Deerfield ordinance contends assault weapons are not covered by the Second Amendment.

“The possession, manufacture, and sale of assault weapons in the Village of Deerfield is not reasonably necessary to protect an individual’s right to self-defense or the preservation or efficiency of a well-regulated militia,” the ordinance reads.

A spokesperson for the Brady Campaign, a nonprofit organization that advocates for gun control, told BuzzFeed News that they “applaud” the actions by Deerfield “to keep their citizens safer.”

“These ordinances have clearly and correctly been ruled constitutional, and we hope that Highland Park and Deerfield serve as positive examples for other communities moving forward,” the organization added.

But the NRA said they were backing a legal challenge to the ordinance from a guns rights organization based in Illinois called Guns Save Life.
In a press release provided to BuzzFeed News, the NRA said they have “support for a lawsuit brought by Guns Save Life challenging the Village of Deerfield, Illinois’ gun confiscation ordinance.”

“We are going to fight this ordinance, which clearly violates our member’s constitutional rights, and with the help of the NRA I believe we can secure a victory for law-abiding gun owners in and around Deerfield,” John Boch, president of Guns Save Life, said in the press release. (BuzzFeed News has reached out to Boch for further comment.)

“The National Rifle Association is pleased to assist Guns Save Life in defense of this freedom,” said Chris W. Cox, the executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action.

Former first lady Barbara Bush, the 92-year-old wife of former President George H.W. Bush is in “failing health” and has decided not to seek anymore medical treatment after a long series of recent hospitalizations, a family spokesman announced on Sunday.

Mrs. Bush will “focus on comfort care instead,” a family spokesman Jim McGrath said in a statement.

“Following a recent series of hospitalizations, and after consulting her family and doctors, Mrs. Bush, now age 92, has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care. It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself — thanks to her abiding faith — but for others,” the statement read.

“She is surrounded by a family she adores, and appreciates the many kind messages and especially the prayers she is receiving,” it continued.

McGrath did not elaborate on Bush’s health problems. For decades, she has been treated for Graves’ disease, a thyroid condition.
Fox News reports that Barbara Bush has been married to George H.W. Bush since 1945, when she was 19 and he was 20. They have six children, including former President George W. Bush.

The Bushes have been married longer than any presidential couple in American history and Barbara Bush is one of only two first ladies who was also the mother of a president. The other was Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams and mother of John Quincy Adams.

The former first lady wrote Smith College’s alumnae magazine last month she’s “still old and still in love with the man” she married in 1945, the Boston Globe reported.

“I have had great medical care and more operations than you would believe. I’m not sure God will recognize me; I have so many new body parts! Also, George Bush has given me the world. He is the best — thoughtful and loving,” she said.

Barbara Pierce Bush was born in Rye, N.Y. Her father was the publisher of McCall’s and Redbook magazines. She married at age 19 while George Bush was a young naval aviator. After World War II, the Bushes moved to Texas where he went into the oil business.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley tweeted Sunday that Barbara Bush is “a woman of great faith, great strength, and an unwavering love of country.”
We wish her the best and pray that she lives the rest of her life in comfort.

American film director Morgan J. Freeman personally apologized to Mexico on Wednesday after President Donald Trump ordered National Guard troops to the southern border.

In a tweet, Freeman said the “egregious step” amounted to an “ego stunt” that had left him “embarrassed” to be an American.

“Dear Mexico, I apologize for the egregious step taken by our President today,” he wrote. “I hope you know his views do not reflect those of the majority of Americans, and I hope his little “ego stunt” will be over soon. Embarrassed to be an American today.”
Freeman made the comments after Trump signed an official memorandum on Wednesday to deploy the National Guard to the U.S.-Mexico border, claiming that “the security of the United States is imperiled by a drastic surge of illegal activity on the southern border.”

“During the administrations of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, the National Guard provided support for efforts to secure our southern border,” the memo says. “The crisis at our southern border once again calls for the National Guard to help secure our border and protect our homeland.”

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he would order National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexican border, hours after leading transition policy adviser Ken Blackwell told Fox Business Network that sending troops would show a coherent Trump policy of treating illegal immigration as a national security and homeland security issue, using all the levers of American foreign and domestic power to enact his policy.

The president had been considering deploying the U.S. military to the border as a caravan of Central Americans are traveling through Mexico, approaching the American border. On Tuesday, President Trump announced that until a border wall is built, he believes he should send troops to secure the border, and he was exploring options with Defense Secretary James Mattis.

The White House announced late that evening that the president was specifically mobilizing the National Guard to take on this task.
