Consumer Sentiment Hits Five-Month High as Americans Feel More Optimistic About Economy

Consumer sentiment surged to 56.4 points in January, up from 52.9 in December and surpassing market expectations, marking the highest level in about five months. Americans are feeling more optimistic about the economy and their personal finances than they did at the end of 2025. The improvement was broad based, with gains seen across income levels, age groups, education, and political affiliations. Dale Smothers, president and CEO of RDS Wealth Management, joins Alicia Summers and notes that this boost reflects growing confidence among consumers, though he also points to less measurable factors—like media coverage and public perception—that can influence spending and sentiment.
