The story of P’Nut the squirrel is more than a tragic loss of a beloved pet — it has become a flashpoint in the debate over government overreach. P’Nut, rescued in 2017 by Mark Longo and raised with his wife Daniela Bittner, wasn’t just any squirrel. With over half a million Instagram followers, viral TikTok videos, and a quirky personality, P’Nut became an internet icon, often photographed in costumes and props alongside his raccoon sidekick, Fred. The couple even expanded their efforts into a sanctuary housing hundreds of rescued animals.
In October 2024, that all came crashing down. Acting on complaints about unlicensed wildlife possession, agents from New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation, alongside the Health Department, raided the couple’s home. During the seizure, authorities claim P’Nut bit a gloved agent, triggering mandatory rabies testing protocol — which requires euthanasia and brain tissue sampling. Both P’Nut and Fred were killed on the spot. Days later, rabies tests came back negative, but their remains were never returned.
The public backlash was immediate and intense. Social media erupted in outrage, politicians weighed in, and state officials faced bomb threats. Critics argued this was an unnecessary and heavy-handed response, emblematic of an arrogant bureaucracy disconnected from public sentiment. The DEC has since promised policy changes, including the use of body cameras and updated rabies procedures.
